TUESDAY THINGERS 8-19-08

This week Boston Bibliophile asks:

Today's question: LT and RL (real life)- do you have friends in real life that you met through LibraryThing? Have you attended any LT meet-ups in your area? Would you be open to attending meet-ups or is LT strictly an online thing for you?

Sad to say I do not have any real life friends that are on Library Thing. I have met some really nice people there and love to hear what they have to say on all of the different forums but as of yet I don't know of any that live close to me and you would think I would since I live in Los Angeles. I have told my friends about Library Thing but somehow they just don't seem to get how cool it is. I am the only one of my real time friends that does admit to a book addiction. I hope to get more people interested though. I think what I like about the people that I have met so far on LT is that they in general seem to behave themselves and avoid bad online behavior when responding to other peoples posts that they may not agree with. I appreciate not having to read posts that turn in to flame wars just to keep up with what is going on in the book world.

I agree- it seems all the LT people I've talked to are very mature and polite. It's nice to see after years of being in yahoo groups that get way out of control :)

I have to agree with you about how well behaved people are on LT. Most of the other forums I have posted on can get downright scary sometimes.

You know I hadn't really thought about it, but now that you mention it, that is a really appealing thing about LT (the appropriate behavior thing).

My real life friends won't join either. Oh well - they are the ones missing out!

I haven't been able to convert any of my real life friend to LT, either...they look at me like I've grown a second head whenever I try to explain how fun it is to catalog your books and write reviews and to share those with other readers....They enjoy those things in real life, but they can't make the leap to the virtual library.

Yes! Isn't it wonderful to chat about books and life and yet not worry about flaming. I hadn't thought of it but it is definitely a bonus.

I've convinced two RL friends to join plus my boy has an account. I'll get more I hope.

Yes they haven been polite and like wise no library thing person appears to live or be active in Bristol.

I like LT for that very reason! None of my real life peeps are on LT and for some reason I've had a hard time explaining how cool it really is.. even my book club went Huh? when I was talking about it.

BTW I live in Orange County, CA

why hadn't I realized that? You're absolutely right about there being very few rude comments or flame throwers!

My rl friends don't "get" LT either, they wonder how I find the time for "all that book stuff" (could be that I let the dishes pile up in the sink, but since I'm online, you'll never know!)

Actually my sister was happy that I met people online with similar book addictions. I think she felt that I'd be unlikely to meet people like that in real life.
